From Barmer's Desert Villages to Forgotten Crafts: Continuing Our Journey Across Rajasthan

Our journey through Rajasthan continued beyond Jodhpur, taking us deeper into the desert landscapes of Barmer district. Here, we discovered communities where handmade traditions continue to survive against all odds—preserved through generations despite changing times, limited opportunities, and growing competition from machine-made products.

Dhanau – A Village Near the India–Pakistan Border

Our next destination was Dhanau, a quiet village in Barmer located just 50 kilometres from the India–Pakistan border. Surrounded by endless desert, this remote village carries stories that span generations and borders.

Meeting Harshchand Ji – Preserving the Art of Appliqué

Here, we met Harshchand Ji, an artisan dedicated to preserving the beautiful tradition of handmade appliqué work. His family's story is deeply connected to history—his grandfather migrated to India during the Partition, carrying with him artistic traditions that continue to inspire their work today.

Their appliqué designs beautifully blend influences from both India and Pakistan, making every handcrafted piece a reflection of shared cultural heritage.

Within their community, appliqué textiles are more than decorative objects. They are treasured gifts presented during weddings as part of a bride's dowry, symbolising craftsmanship, patience, and family heritage. Children begin learning the craft from an early age, ensuring these traditions continue from one generation to the next.

Through Madhues, Harshchand Ji's family is now ready to share this remarkable heritage with customers around the world.

A National Award-Winning Pattu Artist

Dhanau also introduced us to one of the most inspiring artists of our journey—a National Award-winning Pattu weaver.

His home stood alone in the middle of the desert, surrounded by sand dunes, strong winds, and complete silence. Despite the harsh climate and limited resources, he continues weaving pattu exactly as his ancestors did, using traditional techniques that have remained unchanged for generations.

Watching him work was like stepping into another era. Every thread reflected extraordinary patience, discipline, and dedication to preserving one of Rajasthan's oldest weaving traditions.

We are honoured to bring his handcrafted creations to Madhues and help introduce this extraordinary craft to a wider audience.

Barmer – Searching for the Last Kashida Kari Artists

Our journey then took us across Barmer in search of artisans practicing the traditional craft of Kashida Kari embroidery.

What we found was both inspiring and heartbreaking.

As machine-made products have become more common and artisan incomes have declined, many families have been forced to leave the craft behind in search of more sustainable livelihoods. A tradition that once flourished across the region now survives in only a handful of homes.

Keeping an Ancient Craft Alive

After a long search, we finally met an artist who continues creating beautiful Kashida embroidery from her home. Her family has practiced this intricate craft for generations, although today it is no longer their primary source of income.

Her home was filled with stunning embroidered textiles, each carrying countless hours of handwork and generations of knowledge. Yet the value these pieces receive in today's market rarely reflects the skill and dedication behind them.

Despite these challenges, she remains committed to preserving her family's legacy.

When we shared Madhues' vision of connecting independent Indian artists with customers across the world, her excitement was unmistakable. Together, we hope to help revive Barmer's fading embroidery tradition and ensure that future generations continue to value this remarkable craft.
