This journey took us across Rajasthan—from the vibrant lanes of Pushkar to the artisan villages of Jodhpur—to meet the incredible creators who are now part of the Madhues family.

The journey Begins in Pushkar

Our journey started in Jaipur, where we boarded a bus to Pushkar. The ride itself felt like a rollercoaster, taking us from Jaipur's open plains into the winding hills surrounding one of Rajasthan's most vibrant cultural towns.

As soon as we arrived, we stepped into the colourful world of the Pushkar Mela. Everywhere we looked, there were artists, musicians, handcrafted treasures, and centuries-old traditions coming alive through the bustling marketplace.

Meeting Vinod – Handmade Cotton Craft Artist

Among the many talented creators, we met Vinod, a well-known local artisan whose passion for handmade cotton craft immediately stood out.

His collection includes beautifully handcrafted dreamcatchers, dreamcatcher mirrors, cotton sling bags, earrings, home décor pieces, and many other unique creations. Every product reflects patience, creativity, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Beyond creating art, Vinod enjoys teaching his craft to both local and international students. His enthusiasm for sharing knowledge perfectly aligns with Madhues' mission of preserving India's handmade traditions while supporting independent artists.

Discovering Kashmiri Craftsmanship in Pushkar

Our next discovery was Ganesh, who works alongside artisan Parvez and skilled craftsmen from Kashmir.

Their collection features traditional Kashmiri handmade products including painted miniature cups, decorative tiffin boxes, home décor pieces, and finely crafted gift items. Their work beautifully combines detailed artistry with generations of cultural heritage.

With these remarkable collaborations, our Pushkar chapter came to an end—but our journey had only just begun.

Jodhpur – Home of Panja Durrie & Dabu Printing

The next morning, we travelled to Jodhpur, a city celebrated for two extraordinary traditional crafts: Panja Durrie weaving and Dabu hand block printing.

Visiting Salawas Village

Our first stop was Salawas, a small artisan village famous for Panja Durrie weaving.

Here we met Ramesh Ji, who has dedicated more than six decades to this remarkable craft. His family has practiced Panja weaving for generations, continuing the tradition despite limited resources and modern challenges.

Their traditional red mud home, decorated with beautiful folk wall art, reflected the simplicity and heritage that define rural Rajasthan.

Ramesh Ji introduced us to the unique Panja tool used to weave every rug by hand. Their durries are crafted using cotton and camel wool, coloured with natural dyes, making every piece durable, sustainable, and completely unique.

Until now, their beautiful creations were sold only through local markets. Through Madhues, their handmade rugs can now reach customers across India and around the world.

The Art of Dabu Printing

Back in the heart of Jodhpur, we met Mr. Abdul Rehman, a master artisan preserving the ancient craft of Dabu printing.

Dabu is a natural mud-resist printing technique that requires remarkable patience and precision. The process begins by hand-applying mud to create intricate designs. Once dried, the fabric is dyed using natural colours. Finally, the mud is washed away to reveal stunning patterns beneath.

Every piece goes through multiple careful stages, making Dabu printing one of India's most labour-intensive textile traditions.

This beautiful craft has been passed down through Abdul Rehman's family for generations, beginning with his great-grandparents. Today, only a handful of families continue to preserve this heritage.

Through Madhues, these timeless handcrafted textiles will now find homes far beyond Rajasthan while helping keep this extraordinary tradition alive.
